Lord of the Dance - Michael Flatley
Micheal Flatley is one of the most recognisable and biggest stars in world dance over the last few decades. Originally hailing from Chicago, Illinois – born to Irish parents, he began dancing lessons at the age of 11, and by 1975 became the first non European to win the coveted All Ireland Dance Championships. The also trained as an amateur boxer, and plays flute to a professional level – also winning the All Ireland Championships twice with his chosen instrument. He went on to spend much of the 1980s touring the United States as an Irish folk musician, but his reputation as a dancer was growing, and in 1989 he officially set the Guinness world record for speed tap, at an astounding 28 taps per second. The following year he was names as a “Living Treasure” by National Geographic for mastery of a traditional art form, making him the youngest person ever to achieve that accolade. Riverdance, which catapulted Flatley to international fame was originally conceived as an intermission act for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, and the original 7 minute production was turned into a full stage show which toured Europe and the States in the mid nineties. At this time Flatley was recognised by the Guinness book of records for a again, this time as the highest earning dancer of all time, earning a recorded $1.6 million per week. He famously insured his legs for a record breaking $40 million dollars. The current Michael Flatley – Lord of the Dance Tour that is scheduled is his first full tour in over a decade, and he is playing venues in Belfast, Sheffield, Manchester, London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, Newcastle and Belfast.
