Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen is a true legend in music, with a career that spans back over fifty years. The Canadian singer/songwriter embarked on his career in the 50’s in Canada, but when he left his native Quebec in the mid 1960’s he achieved some recognition as part of Andy Warhol’s Factory Crowd. In the early days he mainly concentrated his literary talents on penning music for other artists, and for many years the song “Suzanne” which he wrote for Judy Collins was his biggest hit, being covered by many other artists. After performing his own work himself at a number of small folk festivals in California, he came to the attention of Columbia Records who signed him and promoted his first solo album in 1967, titled “Songs of Leonard Cohen”. The album was received with outstanding reviews within folk music circles, and spent over a year in the charts, cementing his position as a cult name in the folk music scene. Several of the songs he released on that album achieved mainstream success when covered by other artists of the day, including James Taylor and Judy Collins. Cohen went on to spend much of the next two decades touring the United States writing dozens of tracks that are now folk music classics. He was returned into the mainstream limelight in 2004 when KD Lang recorded a cover of his track Hallelujah, which she performed at the Olympic Ceremony in Vancouver in 2010. Between these dates the same track went on to break records as it went to number one in the singles charts after it was covered by Jason Castro on American Idol, however the version that reached number one was the Jeff Buckley release. In 2008 the song placed first, second and 36th in the UK charts, with covers by Alexandra Burke, Jeff Buckley and the original Leonard Cohen version. It was the first time that three versions of the same song had charted concurrently in the UK since the early days of the charts.
