Gorillaz
From a chance meeting in 1998 between then Blur front man Damon Albarn and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett the Gorillaz have gone from an idea scribbled on the back of a beer mat into the one of the World’s biggest bands. As they tour the UK, the Gorillaz make for an unmissable night out of graphic bandsman ship and amazing music to boot. In creating original members Murdoc, Noodle, Russel Hobbs and 2D in 2001, Hewlett and Albarn gave the world what they had never seen before, a full computerized band. Their self titled, Mercury Music Prize nominated, debut release in 2001 sold a phenomenal seven million copies across the globe and took the world by the storm. This featured guests alongside the Gorillaz in the form of Dan the Automator and the legendary West Coast Hieroglyphics rapper Del the funkee homosapien. In 2005 they released their second LP, Demon Dayz, exclusively produced by then production guru and man of the moment Dangermouse. The LP was a huge success and charted at number one in the UK pop charts. It featured single “Feel good inc” featuring daisy age rappers De La soul which successfully charted at number two on the hit parade. They followed this up with the single “dirty harry” which featured bootie brown from the pharcyde on a memorable guest rapping slot. After trying to take the Gorillaz on a world tour it became evident it would be too expensive to make this happen and happen well so in 2009 Albarn had a rethink and decided to rope in some of the biggest names in pop to take this show out onto the road. Ex Clash members Mick Jones and Paul Simonen were recruited and the Gorillaz as we know them now were formed. In March 2010 their third number one LP was released, “Plastic Beach” with its lead single “Stylo” featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack to instant and critical acclaim. 2010 also saw the Gorillaz perform their largest ever shows, at Coachella in California and headlining the Friday nights slot at Glastonbury on the pyramid stage as a last minute replacement for U2.
