Despite having been formed over a decade ago, Goldfrapp continue to break new ground in the synth/electronica genre’s with every album released. The duo of Alison Goldfrapp (who formally sung on tracks by both Orbital and Tricky) and Will Gregory formed in 1999 in London, and were quickly catapulted to fame being nominated for a Mercury music prize in 2000. Despite this recognition by the industry, their debut album failed to achieve mainstream success, undeterred the duo went on to release their second album in 2003 titled “Black Cherry” which achieved further critical acclaim, being nominated for a BRIT, and winning both an ASCAP and an Ivor Novello award. The album was a departure from the ambient / chilled styling’s of the debut album and moved further into the realms of funk-pop and electronic, while retaining elements of chillout beats. The singles ‘Train’ and ‘Strict Machine’ are both instantly recognisable, and the latter earned the duo a number one in the US Dance charts. Goldfrapp never intended to make dance records, but following the adoption by the house music scene of their work, the next album released played heavily on the popularity that they had garnered in the club scene, and went on to debut at number two in the UK albums chart, selling over 50,000 copies in its first week. The album “Supernature” went on to sell well over a million copies worldwide making it by far the most commercially successful album of theirs to date. 2007 saw the release of their much anticipated fourth studio album, and in this release they moved away from the up-tempo house beats of the previous album and instead concentrated on more downbeat, sullen tempo’s that had featured on their original albums. The album was a further great success in the UK, going on to peak at number two, and several singles were released that made it into the top 10 on the official UK singles chart.
