U2
One of the biggest bands in Rock and Roll History, Irish superstars U2 emerged from the overly synthesised music scene of the 1980’s with a powerful blend of fantastic music, incredible showmanship, and layered guitar riffs that have gone on to define them. Formed in Dublin in 1976 their style is best defined as post-punk which was certainly ahead of its time, as it was before Punk itself had managed to popularise itself in Dublin. The band was formed when Larry Mullen Jr posted a notice on their school bulletin board that he was looking for musicians to form a group, and after a few name changes they became U2 in 1977. The following year was their big break, while all the members were still in school – winning a national talent contest that was sponsored by Irish brand Guinness. By the end of that year, they were approached by the then manager of the Stranglers with an offer to manage the fledgling rockers. Despite not being signed to any label at the time they released their first EP, titled “U2 Three” which topped the Irish national charts, and they embarked on winning over the UK market. Despite not getting very far in raising their profile in the UK, they released another single in 1980, “Another Day” which went on to top the Irish charts for a second time, and they were then finally signed to Island Records. Over the next three years they continued to enjoy moderate success, and toured extensively building a strong grass roots support across the country, but failed to make a breakthrough until 1983 ad their release of the Album “War”. It entered the UK Album charts in first position, and went on to just miss out on a top 10 position in the US, but it was enough to propel them from playing the club circuit around England, to playing Arena’s across the United States. From then on they went to release hit album after hit album, and have gone on to sell over 150 million albums and have one a record breaking 22 Grammy awards. In 2005 the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the first year that they were eligible to be nominated for the prestigious classification.
