Leftfield are without question one of the bands to put UK dance music on the map, Formed in 1990 by two friends Paul Daley and Neil Barnes they broke heady boundaries with their mix of progressive dance music, hard house and dub and reggae rhythms. Alongside their contemporaries, the Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Fatboy Slim and Groove Armada, they helped to bring dance music out of the clubs and into the arenas and festivals.Their debut Lp "Leftism" released in 2005 on the Hard Hands label on was nominated for a Mercury Music prize and made its way into the countries record and CD collections. It narrowly missed out to another dance music classic, Portishead's "Dummy" but placed Leftfield on the dance music strata for many years to come. They also had a major hit with "Open Up" featuring the Sex Pistols's own John Lydon. They seemed to feature on all the big gen X movie soundtracks of the time, including features on Danny Boyle's Trainspotting, Shallow Grave as well as Hackers and GoThey followed up on Leftizm's success five years later with the release of Rhythm and Stealth to huge hype and anticipation. It secured the number one spot on the pop charts but whilst nominated and heavily backed, lost out on the Mercury Music prize again, this time to Badly Drawn Boy's "Hour of the Bewilderbeast" . The LP spawned their biggest hit so far "Planet Phat" which then featured on the iconic Guinness advert, which went on to be voted by Channel 4 the best advert of all time. They also branched into more work with hip hop artists as they recorded "Afrika Shox" with the Godfather of Hip hop himself, Afrika Bambaata and "Dusted" with a then wet behind the ears Roots Manuva. They built up an enormous fan base during this time with their iconic live performances, with a soundsystem that was described in many quarters as ear splitting. Paul Daley also broke off a very successful DJ career over the next ten years. So the good news is now that after a ten year absence, Leftfield are back and are about to embark on their biggest ever UK tour. Alas Paul Daley wont be along for the ride, leaving Neil to front the band but expect a relentless explosion of hardcore beats and dancefloor fillers.
