Will John Bishop appear on Mock the Week new series? By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn09 June 2011

Comedy fans that missed out on getting John Bishop tickets for his critically acclaimed Sunshine tour can at least console themselves with the knowledge that hit topical panel show Mock the Week is back for another series, with host Dara O’Briain at the helm.

Bishop has been a regular fixture on the hugely popular show, which contributed to his meteoric rise to becoming a household name in 2010 – and with any luck he’ll be back for the new series, which begins on Thursday 9 June. The line-up has yet to be confirmed, however, although the BBC has provided a tantalising teaser:

“Summer fun and the hit show are now as natural a combination as strawberries and cream, spearmints and rhinos, and Cameron and Clegg, and although a High Court super injunction forbids revealing exact details of the series line-ups, viewers are reassured they can expect the usual magical mix of old favourites, new stars and some other people.”

Here’s hoping Bishop qualifies as one of the ‘old favourites’. Of course, even if he isn’t involved in Mock the Week, he’ll still be lighting up our television screens this year with his own show, John Bishop’s Britain, which has just been re-commissioned for a second series.

The Sunshine tour might be over, but fans of the Liverpudlian legend can still get John Bishop tickets for upcoming gigs at the Manchester Comedy Store in June.

The BBC sings Bishop’s praises By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn07 June 2011

Sadly, the Sunshine tour has now come to an end, which means John Bishop tickets are in fairly short supply – especially now that the Liverpudlian comedian has declared that he wants to take a break from touring for a while.

Comedy fans shouldn’t despair, however, as the BBC recently announced that they’re commissioning a second series of hit show John Bishop’s Britain. The show consists of a mix of stand-up and real-life stories from celebrities and the great British public. Its first series was hugely popular, averaging 4.2 million viewers.

Bishop was predictably chuffed with the news. He said: “I am thrilled that BBC One have agreed to a second series and just hope that everyone enjoys it as much as the first one.”

It seems the BBC is equally pleased with the deal – and with the inevitable boost to ratings it will bring. BBC commissioning executive Karl Warner added: “John continues to go from strength to strength as a performer and has quickly established himself as part of the comedy elite on BBC One. We love working with him and think this second series is going to get even better.”

The upcoming series will be filmed in Manchester and consist of six 30-minute episodes, although there’s no word as yet on when it will be broadcast. If you’re pining for a comedy fix in the meantime, then you can get hold of John Bishop tickets for June dates at the Manchester Comedy Store.

John Bishop’s Britain is back By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn06 June 2011

John Bishop tickets are dwindling now that the larger-than-life funny-man has finally come to the end of his hugely successful Sunshine tour. The tour concludes officially tonight (June 6) with what will undoubtedly be a riotous show at Liverpool’s Echo arena.

Bishop has been touring more or less continually for the past couple of years – first, with his critically acclaimed Elvis Has Left the Building show and most recently with his Sunshine act. It’s no wonder, then, that the 44-year-old wants to take a break from the road and focus his energies on the more sedate endeavour of writing an autobiography.

Yesterday he tweeted: “Can’t believe my own tour is over in two days, it will feel very strange”, swiftly followed by: “What a great night in Liverpool. Last one tomorrow then a long time off.”

It won’t be all rest and relaxation however, as it was recently confirmed that the BBC has commissioned a second series of hit comedy show John Bishop’s Britain. The show, which is a mixture of stand-up and real-life stories, netted big ratings last year, with an average of 4.2 million viewers.

The BBC are calling on people to take part and be interviewed about their funny, true, real-life stories, so anyone looking for their 15 minutes of fame (or hilarity) should consider getting in touch!

Although the Sunshine tour is almost over, John Bishop tickets are still on sale for his string of upcoming gigs at Manchester’s Comedy Store.

John Bishop tickets for the Sunshine tour are scarce By: Chris Olson03 June 2011

One of the most prominent comedians currently in the UK, John Bishop rose to stardom after some excellent performances on hit shows like BBC2’s Mock The Week and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Road Show.

Having completed a hugely successful tour entitled Elvis Has Left The Building (which fans can buy on DVD), Bishop is now almost at the end of his Sunshine tour, which has proven to be one of the most exciting comedy events of the year.

John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the last handful of dates on the Sunshine tour, which concludes in Liverpool on June 6.

If you are not familiar with his comedy, we recommended that you watch some of his hilarious stand-up routines on Live at the Apollo, or even check out his hit BBC show John Bishop’s Britain. His story-telling skills, blokeish charm and sharp observational comments about British society have made him one of the most popular comedians around.

Coming from Liverpool, his background and heritage play a large role in his jokes and gags, making for some hilarious anecdotes. He also uses his family life as inspiration for his comedy, which gives his shows a personal touch and maintains a healthy sense of realism. In terms of the subject matter of his routines, he’s comparable to comedians like Lee Evans, Michael McIntyre and Billy Connolly.

So, if you are already a staunch fan, or simply fancy an evening of genuine laughter, get yourself some John Bishop tickets for the last couple of dates on his Sunshine tour. It will definitely cheer you up!

John Bishop returns to Liverpool this weekend By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn02 June 2011

The hugely successful Sunshine tour comes to an end in Liverpool this weekend and John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the last handful of dates at the famous Echo arena. These shows of course have particular significance for the comedian, as they represent a return to his much-loved home town.

It seems the local crowd are keen to see him perform again too, if Liverpool Confidential’s enthusiastic write-up is anything to go by – and they’re even willing to overlook his colourful language.

“Liverpool’s latest conquering hero freely admits he effs and blinds a lot. And who doesn’t like a good swear? But it means this show for over 16s only. His x-rated vocabulary has caused him a few problems with the BBC, but plain-speaking Bishop, the greatest ever success of the Rawhide Comedy Club, knows we can take it.”

In other news, the Liverpool Echo newspaper recently published a black and white archive shot of the 44-year-old comedian dressed up in full 60s costume, very much resembling a member of the Bee Gees.

Perhaps the photo will help convince his wife he’s not boring, if his recent post on Twitter doesn’t work. The funny-man tweeted: “This is not a boring tweet-I apologise to the rest of the world I am just trying to prove to my wife I am interesting!”

The Sunshine tour concludes on June 6 and John Bishop tickets are now on sale for the last few remaining gigs, so don’t miss out!

John Bishop’s got tweeting talent By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn02 June 2011

Comedy fans with John Bishop tickets for the very last few dates on his Sunshine tour can look forward to an evening of laughter – but if you’re in the market for a warm-up act, then look no further than the comedian’s Twitter profile, which is full of witty observations.

It seems the 44-year-old comic is a big fan of Britain’s Got Talent – and the show has provided plenty of material for his amusing tweets. A few days ago, he quipped: “Just watching BGT – how pervy is the Hoff!”

This was followed by a swift backtrack, however, as he later amended: “Watched more BGT And I have changed my mind on Hoff-because if you have got to sit through what he has then you something to distract you!”

The latest series of the talent show features a rejuvenated panel of judges, including new addition Michael McIntyre, who Bishop has worked with on many occasions, perhaps explaining his interest in the programme – and it seems he might even consider participating. Well, his dog might.

He joked: “Does anyone has a harmonica that fits a dog-I think with 12 mth practice and some self belief my dog will at least get to BGT semi next year.”

The Sunshine tour concludes on June 6 at Liverpool’s Echo arena and John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the last handful of dates on the schedule, in Belfast and Liverpool.

John Bishop: from corporate suit to comic genius By: Greg Hall31 May 2011

John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the final stretch of his hugely successful Sunshine tour – and whilst he may now be a king of comedy, his path to stardom began with a rather astonishing career change.

A former semi-pro footballer, he quit his job as a sales director at a pharmaceutical company to become a full time stand-up performer in 2006. For many, it would be a risk not worth contemplating, but luckily for comedy fans, he rolled the dice and won handsomely. He explains:

“It’s not a job that I think normal people choose. It sort of picks you and then you find you can’t not do it. I had a good job, kids, mortgage, pension plan, BUPA, company car and gold executive cards for two airlines, but I gave it up at the end of 2006 to make strangers laugh.”

“It’s a story that seems to resonate with a lot of people who are trapped doing stuff they don’t want to. Since I started doing it I’ve had emails off people who have actually changed their jobs, so even if its not funny it could be perceived as good careers advice.”

Those who have bought John Bishop tickets would probably agree that he made the right switch from a corporate suit to a witty wise-cracker, but the straight-talking scouser doesn’t think he is the funniest member of his family. When asked what makes him laugh, he said:

“My dad and my mates. They’re all funnier than me and never tire of telling me, and they’re right. Also we have a new dog called Bilko, he makes me laugh, but he can’t talk so would be a **** stand-up.”

John Bishop: an Edinburgh favourite By: Greg Hall30 May 2011

John Bishop tickets are still on sale for his soon to conclude Sunshine tour, which will finish with what promises to be a raucous gig in his hometown of Liverpool on June 6.

Much of the comedian’s success stems from his performances at the Edinburgh festival, where his routines garnered praise from comedy connoisseurs and fans alike in 2009 and 2010. In 2009 he was nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award (colloquially known as an ‘Eddie’) for his Elvis Has Left the Building show.

The likeable Liverpudlian has a real affinity for the annual event, which is the comedy equivalent of Mecca. On Edinburgh 2010 he enthused: “The festival has been good, it’s been totally different this year than previous years, but it’s been ace I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Last year’s bash was a big breakthrough for him. In previous showcases he’d had a more low-key impact, but this time around he wowed audiences at the prestigious, 1,000-strong McEwan Hall.

He still managed to find time for his first love, Liverpool FC, however. Between gigs he shot down south to Anfield to watch their opening Premier League game against Arsenal. Now that’s dedication.

Those with John Bishop tickets for upcoming gigs can look forward to plenty of belly laughs. He makes light of everyday life with his observational humour, whilst his self-deprecation and grounded sense of perspective since his recent climb to fame have kept his routine relevant to crowds, who have been flocking to his shows in their droves.

John Bishop performs at C4 Comedy Gala By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn27 May 2011

John Bishop tickets are still on sale for his hugely successful Sunshine tour, but the Liverpudlian funny-man recently took time out of his hectic schedule to perform at the C4 Comedy Gala, a charitable event that raises money for the Great Ormond Street children’s hospital.

The night, hosted at London’s O2 arena, saw routines from a raft of Britain’s finest comedy talent; including Lee Evans, Michael McIntyre, Jack Dee, Jonathan Ross, Sean Lock, Dara O’Briain, Micky Flanagan, Jason Manford, Alan Carr, Jo Brand, Jack Whitehall, Kevin Bridges, Rhod Gilbert, Sarah Millican, John Bishop and more – making it something of a marathon evening.

Evening Standard reviewer Bruce Dessau gave his verdict on the proceedings: “Of the next generation Kevin Bridges stood out, brilliantly equating changing phone tariffs with footballers changing teams. Jon Richardson’s fussiness deserved more time, as did sourpuss Jack Dee.”

He continued: “Jonathan Ross, recently mistaken for the Go Compare man, should have donated some of his. Best line? Easily Sean Lock suggesting that the ash cloud was actually caused by Ryan Giggs burning newspapers.”

If you didn’t get the chance to attend the gala in person, you will be able to watch it on the box on Channel 4 at 10pm on June 9.

For a taste of the unbeatable live comedy experience, John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the remaining handful of dates on his Sunshine tour, which finally draws to a close in Liverpool on June 22.

John Bishop’s rocky road to fame By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn26 May 2011

With John Bishop tickets in continual demand, the admiration of comedy fans and critics alike and numerous TV credits to his name, the Liverpudlian comedian has had a very successful couple of years – but it wasn’t all plain sailing, however.

Bishop has had an eventful life, much of which provides the material for his stand-up routines. After studying at Manchester Polytechnic, he then cycled around the world and spent some time in the US doing soccer coaching. He returned home after finding his romantic advances on women ‘lost in translation’.

“They couldn’t understand my accent,” he jokes. “They thought I was Hungarian.”

Once back in the UK, he embarked on a successful career as a sales director at a pharmaceuticals company and started a family with wife Melanie. Unfortunately, the pair later split – which is when John turned to comedy.

“I was spending my time feeling depressed or getting drunk. I’d only ever been to two comedy clubs in my life, but I ended up at this place and thought I could sit at the back and not talk to anyone. The fella on the door said it was an open mic night and you didn’t have to pay if you got on stage. After that I did a couple more open mic spots and then my first headline slot and I started getting paid… I stumbled into it.”

Thankfully, Melanie attended one of his gigs and was won over by his performance. The couple reconciled and are still together today – and Bishop’s career has gone from strength to strength.

The Sunshine tour will be drawing to a close in June, but John Bishop tickets are still on sale for the remaining dates in major cities across the UK.

John Bishop tickets sell out at Nottingham arena By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn25 May 2011

John Bishop tickets for his recent shows at the 5000-capacity Capital FM Arena in Nottingham were completely sold out, and according to the Nottingham Post, the audience enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining evening.

Reviewer Simon Wilson praised Bishop’s well-known trademark autobiographical and observational stand-up style, citing an amusing example from the comedian’s routine: “When you’re in your 40s you can’t say to women the things you used to when you were in your 20s for fear of being branded a pervert.”

The 44-year-old Liverpudlian often draws on personal experience of married life and being a father to teenage boys for his material. Referring to the famous incident at Robbie Williams’ BRIT awards after-party, where he was mistaken for Bez from the Happy Mondays by a tabloid newspaper, he joked:

“Bez has done some of the best drugs in the world for two decades – I’ve been married for 18 years and the effects appear to be exactly the same.”

Bishop recently announced that he’s going to be taking a well-deserved break from touring, following the conclusion of his successful marathon Sunshine tour. Prior to that, he was on the road with his Elvis Has Left the Building tour, as well as appearing regularly on various TV comedy panel shows. He has stated that he’ll be using the time off to pen an autobiography.

The Sunshine tour concludes in June in Liverpool and John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the last handful of dates in Brighton, Cardiff, Manchester and other major UK cities.

John Bishop visits teenager cancer patients By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn24 May 2011

The hugely successful Sunshine tour is finally nearing its end and the last few John Bishop tickets are being snapped up for his remaining handful of gigs – so it’s heart-warming to see that the comedian recently found the time in his busy schedule to visit teenagers battling cancer.

Bishop made an appearance at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology’s Teenage Cancer Trust unit to meet and greet patients and staff, according a report from the Wirral Globe. The Liverpudlian later said:

“It was an inspiring day, with all the patients having a great outlook on life. It was humbling to see the effects that Teenage Cancer Trust can have by creating a specialised unit, with specialised staff.”

24-year-old Mark Billington, currently a patient at the unit, was also pleased with the visit: “It’s great that John Bishop has come to see the unit, he’s a really funny fella and when we were chatting it was like chatting to one of the lads.”

The 44-year-old comedian, who rose to fame last year after a string of high-profile TV performances of his hilarious, blokeish stand-up routines, has been involved in several charity efforts over recent months, including the hugely successful 2011 Comic Relief event, where he participated in a sketch with Take That.

For an evening of side-splitting entertainment, get John Bishop tickets for the last few dates on his acclaimed Sunshine tour. Seats are still available for upcoming dates in Cardiff, Brighton, Liverpool and other major UK cities.

John Bishop goes down a treat in Aberdeen By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn23 May 2011

The Sunshine tour is fast drawing to a close and John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the last handful of shows on the schedule – but the Liverpudlian comedian is showing no signs of flagging, according to a review in the Aberdeen Evening Express.

Bishop recently put on a gig at the Exhibition and Conference Centre, which Gavin Roberts of the Express said “had the audience in fits of laughter”. He continued:

“John Bishop’s story about rubbing shoulders with stars at the Brit Awards – only to be mistaken for Bez from The Happy Mondays – had the AECC crowd in stitches, and there were plenty of local references for the Aberdeen audience too.”

The tour has received a great deal of praise from assorted critics and comedy fans alike – just one of the many successes the comedian has had in the past year, which saw him become a household name, seemingly overnight.

“I’ve called this the Sunshine tour, because someone said to me it’s been a big year for me, it’s my time in the sunshine,” the 44-year-old comic says. “I thought that was a lovely phrase.”

The tour concludes in the stand-up maestro’s home city of Liverpool on June 6 and John Bishop tickets are now on sale for his remaining shows in major cities across the UK, including London, Cardiff, Brighton, Belfast and Liverpool.

Bishop nominated for TV Choice award By: Iain MacRitchie20 May 2011

Scouse comedy genius John Bishop has been nominated for a TV Choice award in the category of ‘Best Comedy’. His BBC1 show John Bishop’s Britain has garnered a huge following since its release and has had consistent praise from critics.

In addition to this potential accolade, the comedian is in the midst of a nationwide tour, with dates still to come in Sheffield, Brighton and Aberdeen, among other cities around the UK. John Bishop tickets are currently on sale, so grab some now and experience his hilarious routines for yourself.

In other news, the comedian recently tweeted his fondness of Lady Gaga, saying that she is a “brilliant” performer, after watching her on BBC 3 at Radio 1′s Big Weekend. That isn’t the only compliment he’s dished out in the past couple of days, however – he also called Stephen Fry the “world’s cleverest man” after recording an episode of QI with fellow comedians Frank Skinner, Sean Lock and Alan Davies.

Bishop’s success has been attributed to his humility and his innate ability to connect with his audience over everyday matters and family foibles. His comedy avoids generic ‘manufactured’ joke-telling and maintains a sense of realism by incorporating jokes and anecdotes about his own personal life.

John Bishop tickets are still on sale for the last handful of dates on his Sunshine tour, so get yours now while they’re still floating around. This is your chance to see the comedy marvel in the flesh and experience the side-splitting comedy that has critics going crazy.

Bishop goes Gaga By: Iain MacRitchie19 May 2011

Scouse stand-up comedian John Bishop is nearing the end of his Sunshine UK tour, with gigs still to come in cities including Sheffield, Brighton and his home-town of Liverpool. John Bishop tickets are available and stocks are limited, so grab some as soon as possible.

The tour has so far sold very well and the show in Dartford on May 16th was very positively received. A review from the York Press in January states that his “sharply observed humour about life as a 44-year-old father of three teenage boys has most of the audience feeling helpless with laughter.”

The Sunshine tour has been widely well reviewed, with similar sentiments coming from other writers across the country. A particularly enthusiastic reviewer from the Guardian said: “I can’t help falling in love with this open, optimistic show.”

In other news, the comedian recently proclaimed his love for the work of the notorious pop songstress, Lady Gaga. He tweeted saying: “Just watching Lady Gaga on BBC 3 at Radio 1 big weekend -if only she could play football – she is brilliant!”

The singer blasted out hits at Radio 1′s Big Weekend festival last weekend, titillating millions of viewers and audience members alike. The Gaga virus has obviously been caught by the UK’s most popular and endearing comedy talent.

John Bishop tickets are still on sale for his remaining tour dates, so go over now and grab whatever is left. It doesn’t matter where you’re sitting, you won’t be able to see beyond your tears anyway – so just sit back and take in the hilarity.

John Bishop talks about his comedy philosophy By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn18 May 2011

The Sunshine tour may be nearing its end, but John Bishop tickets are still on sale for the last handful of performances – and although the comedian has been on the road for quite some time now, fans can still expect a fresh and original show.

Speaking about his attitude to comedy, Bishop stated that, even though television has been responsible for catapulting him into the mainstream audience, he is keen to keep his routines current.

“I won’t do routines at gigs that I’ve done on television. I’m essentially a storyteller not a joke teller, so I have to keep coming up with new stories,” he said.

“To me comedy is like being a magician, once they know the rabbit is coming out of the hat they won’t care. I want people to keep coming to see me and not think there is no point because I’ve already said it all on telly.”

The Liverpudlian comic has previously appeared on a host of TV shows, including Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Live at the Apollo, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Mock the Week. His success has often been attributed to his anecdotal, blokeish style and everyman charm. So what is his secret?

“There’s an element of treating an audience as if they are individuals. I’m absolutely bowled over by people I meet who have made an effort to come… people who have done a four-hour round trip. I’ve got relatives who wouldn’t come to our house for tea if it took four hours.”

If you would like to see the funny man in the flesh, John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for upcoming gigs in Cardiff, London, Liverpool and other major UK cities.

          John Bishop’s Sunshine tour: a down-to-earth delight By: Greg Hall17 May 2011

There is a real buzz surrounding the Sunshine tour at the moment, as it finally draws to a close in June and the last few John Bishop tickets for his remaining gigs steadily dwindle.

Whilst comedy critics could quibble that the funny man’s jokes aren’t exactly the most concisely crafted, one would have to be a modern-day Ebenezer Scrooge not to be tickled by his down-to-earth demeanour and straightforward anecdotes.

He endears with such tales as the time when he was performing on stage at Live at the Apollo, and his slippery Liverpudlian pals were backstage desperately trying to blag freebies from the BBC.

Those with John Bishop tickets can’t help rooting for the Scouse power-house – his audience has an instant identification with the notion that they would probably act in the same humble way if they too were catapulted to celebrity status.

The grounded quality and charm he exudes mean that even when he’s kidding that the best thing about waiting in the green room to go on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross is that you can eat all the free crisps you want, it seems he probably means it.

His current show is a breath of fresh air, a welcoming tonic to the glut of self-indulgent, self-important celebrities bombarding everyday life.

This means his return to the Edinburgh Fringe in August will not be accompanied by pomposity and fanfare, he’s far too modest for that. His stand-up routine shows that he hasn’t forgotten his roots; as amongst other gags, he recollects with trademark self- deprecation the times he struggled to even fill up a hut. These days he is selling out enormous arenas, which shows just how far his star has risen.

John Bishop shines on tour By: Greg Hall16 May 2011

There’s more than a ray of light when you buy John Bishop tickets for the funny man’s ongoing Sunshine tour.

The Liverpudlian (currently living in Manchester) connects with people through his humility, as opposed to the hubris many celebs of his ilk tend to suffer from. On stage at his last arena gig in Liverpool back in December he remarked: “I keep thinking I’ve stolen someone else’s life, this can’t be mine.”

He doesn’t just serve up humble pie for his audience, however. The sardonic scouser cooks up a feast of comic nourishment – and isn’t fazed by the odd heckler, too.

“Hecklers just want to join in. They’re not there to ruin the show because they’re part of it. You’ve just got to manage them. Once, I was doing a gig in Leeds and only a few people turned up and I had a heckler and I put him down so much that he got up to go. But I said to him: ‘Look, you can’t go. There are only 17 people here!’”

These days the amount of people queuing up to buy John Bishop tickets is far beyond such a paltry total, but it certainly didn’t happen overnight for the earnest everyman. It took almost ten years for him to become a hit stand-up star, but his stock has also risen through his appearances on the telly.

He had a prominent role in E4’s Skins, as well as featuring on various comedy panel shows – and he was even a judge on this year’s ‘Let’s Dance’ for Comic Relief.

However, his bread and butter is making the public chuckle, and he certainly succeeds. Buy and sell John Bishop tickets at Seatwave.

John Bishop “looking forward” to end of tour By: Lauren Johnson-Ginn13 May 2011

John Bishop tickets are currently on sale for the last handful of shows on the hugely successful Sunshine tour, and it seems that the Liverpudlian comedian is looking forward to a well-deserved break from life on the road.

“I think it will be a nice end, not only to this tour, but to the last couple of years, I’m really looking forward to it,” he said in a recent interview. He also revealed that he is planning to write an autobiography in his down-time, though he has stated that he has no intentions of hanging up his hat.

“I’ll definitely tour again but I just need to have a couple of years catching up with myself,” he promised, continuing: “That’s where my heart and soul is. I always, always want to perform live.”

Bishop has been praised for his everyman, blokeish style and his down-to-earth storytelling and reflections on domestic life. Explaining his comedy philosophy, he said: “I just want to recreate the feeling of talking to my mates in the pub. I know it sounds odd doing it in front of 16,000 people, but I can.”

The sun may be going down on the Sunshine tour, but there are still John Bishop tickets on sale for upcoming shows in Dartford, Sheffield, Cardiff, Aberdeen, Brighton, Belfast and Liverpool – where the comedian will be celebrating his send-off in style with two consecutive nights at the Echo Arena on June 5 and 6.

John Bishop enjoys time in the sun after rocky beginnings By: Coni Longden-Jefferson12 May 2011

People all over the UK are still desperate to get their hands on John Bishop tickets. The comedy phenomenon has been setting the stand-up scene on fire for the past few years, but it wasn’t so long ago that things weren’t quite as sunny for the Liverpool-born, Runcorn raised comedian.

A failed career as a footballer led to Bishop finding himself stuck as an unhappy pharmaceutical sales director, before stumbling upon a career in comedy after an open mic night in Manchester. Surprisingly, it was the heartbreak following the breakdown of his marriage that actually gave Bishop the material he needed to kick start his foray into the world of stand-up comedy.

The night in question was at the Frog and Bucket club in Manchester – after spontaneously deciding to get on stage for a few minutes, the unlikely star left an hour later to rapturous applause. “All I was doing was talking about my divorce,” he told Bruce Dessau of Wales on Sunday, ahead of his sold out show in Cardiff in three weeks time.

It might have been a divorce and mid life crisis that pushed the TV funny-man to turn his life around – but it has certainly worked. John Bishop tickets are selling at an alarming rate, he is now one of the most recognisable faces on TV and – as if to cement a happy ending to this most unlikely of fairytales – he and his wife are now happily back together.

It seems even Bishop has not failed to notice the turn in his fortunes “I’ve called this the Sunshine tour, because someone said to me it’s been a big year for me, it’s my time in the sunshine,” he says.
